Introduction to
Couples
Counselling

We are passionate about empowering couples to build stronger, healthier relationships. We understand that there are many reasons why couples seek help, and we are here to support you through a range of challenges. Our approach is rooted in experience and compassion, providing you with the tools to navigate your relationship with confidence and clarity.

Areas Covered by Our Couples Counselling

Our couples counselling services address a wide variety of issues, including:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Fertility challenges
  • Trust and intimacy issues
  • Family dynamics
  • Infidelity and betrayal
  • Work and financial stress
  • Separation and divorce

Areas We Cover

We base our couples counselling on the Developmental Model of Couples Counselling, pioneered by Drs. Ellyn Bader and Peter Pearson. Our training and experience encompass several key concepts, including:

  • Goal setting for the relationship
  • The Crucible Model by Dr. David Schnarch
  • Differentiation Theory and its relationship to Attachment Theory
  • Working through affairs and betrayals
  • Understanding the different types of lies within relationships
  • Neuroscience concepts relevant to relationship dynamics
  • The five stages of development in adult relationships and their goals
  • The Couples Questionnaire and The Paper Exercise for diagnosing conflict, negotiation, and communication issues
  • Managing hostility and avoidance
  • Facilitating the Initiator-Inquirer Dialogue
  • Repairing ruptures in relationships
  • Developing strategies for making decisions together

In our sessions, we help you recognise how early childhood experiences influence your communication, behaviour, and responses in your adult relationships. By understanding these dynamics, we can work together to reduce conflict, resolve misunderstandings, and rediscover ways to bond, communicate, and find common ground.

Additional Information

We tailor our approach to meet the unique needs of each couple, whether you are maintaining your relationship or navigating a crisis. Together, we will explore the root causes of your difficulties and identify unhelpful patterns that may be repeating in your relationship. Our goal is to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where you can express your needs and feelings, build more effective communication, and listen with empathy and understanding.

Please note that individual 1:1 sessions may be recommended alongside couples therapy, depending on your specific needs. Additionally, homework is often set as part of the therapeutic process to aid in achieving successful outcomes.
